The Assessment Process
-
You make contact with me using either the enquiry form, by phone (07985514104) or by email (allindyslexia@gmail.com).
-
You may choose to have a screening completed before proceeding to formal assessment. However you may wish to skip this step and progress to full diagnostic assessment.
A screening involves you and your child’s school completing some questionnaires. Then, a face-to-face meeting would take place between myself and your child where they would complete some informal activities. This session would last for roughly an hour and would be completed either at your home, at your child’s school or at my home office in Hedge End, Southampton.
Using this information, I would provide you with a Learner Profile which would outline some of your child’s areas of strength and weakness. The learner profile would also indicate whether further diagnostic assessment may be appropriate. Alternatively, a Learner Profile would also be beneficial for those students who are younger than eight and may be too young for an official diagnosis, but for whom it would be useful to know what areas may need further support in the future.
Should you choose to proceed to a full diagnostic assessment, 50% of the screening fee can be deducted from the full assessment if booked within 3 months of the original screening.
-
If your child has not already been screened, I will ask for you and your child’s school to complete some initial questionnaires. These will need to be completed and returned at least 2 weeks prior to the full assessment and are important for assisting me in making a diagnostic decision.
The assessment itself usually lasts 2-3 hours, without accounting for any rest breaks that your child may need. The assessment involves the use of numerous psychometric testing tools that observe consider the following:
Underlying ability including both visual and verbal ability
Cognitive ability which considers areas such as memory, phonological processing and processing speed.
Attainment in areas such as reading, writing and spelling but, if need is identified in maths, I will also consider this.
Using this information, my observations and responses to the questionnaire, I will be able to draw conclusions about your child’s current attainment.
A few days after the assessment, I will arrange a telephone or video call with you to give a summary of my findings then, around two weeks later, you will receive your full diagnostic report.
The assessment can be completed at your home, at your child’s school or at my home office in Hedge End, Southampton.
Prior to the assessment, your child should have had an up-to-date (within the last 6 months) hearing and sight test.

I have extensive understanding of dyslexia with my professional qualifications and chosen career pathway (having taught in a school specifically for students with Dyslexia and I am now employed as a junior school SENDCO). Both professional and calm, I am able to put your child at the centre of my practice by making sure that I take the time to truly listen to, and understand, their experiences.
I also hold an Assessment Practising Certificate (APC) through PATOSS which means that my assessments meet SASC Guidelines and will be accepted as evidence for Disabled Student Allowance (DSA), which will support their child in their further studies.

Exams Access Arrangements
Exam Access Arrangements are used to support students so that they have an equal chance of demonstrating their potential during an exam. This may look like extra time, the use of a reader or scribe or assistive technologies.
Many schools provide support for access arrangements, so it's important to first reach out to your child's school. However, some schools may lack the expertise for these assessments. If you're a school, I can help with this—please contact me for pricing. If you're a parent or individual seeking access arrangements for exams, make sure to speak with your SENDCO (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator) first.
